Pete VanDyk:
“I write what goes on in my life.”

If you thought that song writing occurred during moments of inspiration, take heed of Peter VanDyk. For Pete, song writing is a continuous, regular, almost relentless process. For someone who enjoys it immeasurably, life can be eating, sleeping - and song writing.
Pete, 17, is both a song writer and a talented guitarist. He is currently promoting a newly released CD, Coming Down. “The sound is country rock with a blues undertone,” he says. It was recorded by his band, Pete VanDyk with Highway Heroes, which includes his younger brother Ed on bass, long time friend Brian Kieft on lead guitar and Producer Steve Partridge on drums. However, the group was recently reunited with good friend Zach Aasman, who will play drums going forward.
Peter’s song writing is truly an art form. “It may start with a (guitar) riff and go from there or I could write an idea and then build the music. There’s really no formula,” Pete says. “I write about what goes on in my life. It could be funny or serious, but the idea is momentary. The lyrics would have no more than one or two re-writes. It just happens.”
For Peter, it began with guitar lessons in Grade 4. By the time he reached Grade 8, his instructor left to go on tour. Losing his instructor spawned the beginnings of jam sessions with good friend Brian and brother Ed. At that time, an R&B sound was the focus. They formed a band called Sycadelic Circus, along with Zach Aasman on drums. Their talents were enjoyed at local bars but, unfortunately, the gigs petered out, giving way to more popular hard core bands.
Determined to continue performing, Pete launched a solo career in classic rock as well as a serious focus in song writing. In 2006 he had the chance to open for Casey Baker at the YMCA. In an intensive week, he recorded his works and brought them to the show, experimenting with different sounds and techniques. This show alone brought him enough bookings to fill eight solid weeks and the release of a CD, Streets in the City, in January 2007.
Although he enjoyed the experience, Pete realized that the acoustic/folk sound does not ignite his passion. Country rock resonates deeply with him, so he pursued the band connection again.
What is the ultimate dream? For Pete, it would be to write and perform songs. And he’s giving it his best shot! To find out more, check out www.myspace.com/petevandyk .
