Storytelling Unites the World

Story Save Quilt : Every square is a journey....

No matter which culture you claim, your people told stories to pass the time, impart wisdom, values, skills, and to entertain. They shared real joys and sorrows and memories of special seasonal events. We are all storytellers. Stories feed our souls as food nourishes our bodies. When we hear “Guess what happened,” that is the beginning of a tale as surely as “Once upon a time.”

Oral storytelling is an ancient art passed along from generation to generation surviving solely by memory. The only tools needed are a teller and listeners. By word and gesture, the story unfolds in the minds of the listeners. Oral tradition storytelling has seen a revival over the past 30 years or so. Storytelling circles and guilds, festivals and other gatherings are springing up around the world. Cultural folk and wonder tales bring us closer together as a global community.

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere (March 20), and on the autumn equinox in the southern. Participants tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible. The theme for 2008 is Dreams.
You can find more information at www.freewebs.com/worldstorytellingday.

The Hamilton Storytelling Circle is hosting a World Storytelling Day event on the evening of March 20. The time and place are yet to be arranged so please contact us for details at www.storywyse.com. If you cannot join us, gather around the light and the warmth of your
family and friends and share the stories of dreams. Dream big!
