Taylor Hunt, Emily Kempe and Shakura Dickson strut their stuff.
Exciting Achievements at the Academy of Film and Performing Arts!
The students of the Academy of Film and Performing Arts have much to celebrate this season! Many of the students have been working diligently and now get the pleasure of reaping the rewards for their hard work.
Four members of the drama department received provincial honours with the Royal Conservatory of Music for their high marks in their Speech and Drama exams. They are Barbara Morrone-Sanchez, Stephanie Sedlbauer, Kyle Sanders and David Kelly; who is a winner for the fifth year in a row!
In dance, three students were nominated by the British Association of Dance for their outstanding achievements in jazz and ballet. Taylor Hunt, Larrissa Jackson and Emily Kempe were nominated in both styles for their excellence. In addition, Taylor and Emily were invited to join the Etobicoke School of the Arts. These are notable accomplishments and it is very rare to be accepted into the higher grades.
Taylor also worked hard to become a certified teacher with the BATD in Modern Jazz/Tap and Step Dancing. She was welcomed to AFPA staff this fall. “It is exciting to watch our little Taylor grow into a successful beautiful young woman,” says director Ellen Irmisch.
Shakura Dickson, a member of the AFPA Performance Team, was recently chosen to play the role of Anita in a production of West Side Story in Toronto. As well as individual achievements, the AFPA’s Performance Team made two trips to Pennsylvania this year to perform at the Celtic Fling and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
The AFPA students also performed to honour our local veterans on Remembrance Day. “I am proud of all their many endeavors, but this one has a special place in my heart,” says Irmisch. “Each year we work hard as a team to create a unique show to remember the amazing men and women of our Armed Forces, and all they have achieved. Being an artist is very special; and knowing our heritage and where we come from gives every individual a foundation to truly be all you can be!”
